STATUS
Endorsed October 2025
Working with the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) Aboriginal Corporation, we were engaged to develop a masterplan for Nanutarra Station in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The project establishes a framework for the site’s future as a place of gathering, environmental stewardship, cultural continuity and community return.
Rather than treating Nanutarra as a collection of isolated buildings, the masterplan considers the site as a connected landscape shaped by history, memory and Country. Existing heritage structures, cultural places, ecological systems and community aspirations were brought together into a single vision for the site.
The resulting masterplan creates a network of interconnected precincts supporting heritage conservation and adaptive reuse, ranger facilities, community accommodation, gathering spaces, tourism opportunities, environmental regeneration initiatives and supporting off-grid infrastructure.
The masterplan establishes a series of interconnected precincts that work together to support life on Country, environmental stewardship and future community use.
Community & Gathering
The Homestead and Community Gathering precincts create places for ceremony, storytelling, shared meals and everyday connection. Existing heritage structures are retained and adapted while new gathering spaces provide opportunities for future cultural activity.
Environmental Stewardship
The Ranger Hub, nursery and regeneration initiatives establish a framework for on-Country programs, native species propagation and ecological rehabilitation, supported by proposed rewilding initiatives across the site.
Community Return
New accommodation precincts provide spaces for individuals and families returning to Country, creating environments designed around comfort, cultural considerations and connection to landscape.
Visitors & Cultural Exchange
Campground facilities, event spaces and interpretive experiences create opportunities for visitors to engage respectfully with Country while supporting long-term economic opportunities.
Resilient Infrastructure
Site-wide off-grid power, water and movement networks support long-term operation in a remote environment and establish a resilient framework for future development.
From Vision to Implementation
The Nanutarra Masterplan establishes the broader framework for the site. The first stage of implementation focuses on conservation and adaptive reuse of the Homestead precinct, restoring significant buildings and creating a foundation for future community use.
