Built in 1922 as the Roleystone Community Hall and transformed into a theatre in 1933, this much-loved venue has long been a space for gathering, creativity, and connection. Redeveloped for the City of Armadale with input from the Roleystone Theatre Group, the project prioritised the theatre’s ongoing role as a community asset as much as a performance space – restoring the original auditorium and introducing new front and back of house facilities to meet contemporary needs.
Set within the bushland of the Perth Hills, the design integrates bushfire resilience strategies while maintaining the character of the site. The heritage building was retained in place, with new works sensitively developed around it. The reconstructed flytower improves backstage functionality, while energy-efficient systems such as Climate Wizards enhance thermal comfort.
This project reflects our belief in architecture as a form of cultural stewardship – reviving places with deep social significance while equipping them for continued use.
