The church and monastery tell their history in layers: each phase of construction introduced a new type of roof tile, leaving a visible record of changing craftsmanship over the centuries. After more than a hundred years of weathering, many of these tiles had shifted and decayed, allowing water to seep into the structures below.
To preserve the authenticity of the buildings, extensive research identified replacement tiles from Monier in France – chosen for their close resemblance in colour, shape, and character to the originals.
Originally built without roof insulation, the restoration included the careful addition of insulation to enhance thermal performance. The primary structural timbers were found to be in remarkably sound condition, showing only minor traces of white ant damage.
The project was led by Carter Roofing in collaboration with CLPM. Their specialist expertise in copper and lead flashings, as well as the integration of rainwater goods, ensured the roofs were not simply repaired but restored with precision, respect, and craftsmanship worthy of the site’s historic significance.
